Summers out, winters in!

13:30

I hate summer. The constant sunshine, ridiculous heat and air so humid you can't breathe.  I spent almost 11 years of my life in a country where I was pretty much guaranteed snow on my birthday- mid December- and summers never really got over 25 degrees Celsius. I thrived in winter- you couldn't keep me indoors. We even used to go on family holidays over to the beach, wrapped up in lots of layers, threw on a windbreaker and took a walk down the beach. Some of my favourite childhood memories are of my family and I walking down the seaside at Skegness in heavy wind.

It's so different here in Auckland. It never really gets super cold. Summers are regularly in the high twenties, and winter days are quite often in the late teens. Gone are the days of snow and hot chocolate, and instead its a not-so-thick jumper and you're fine.

And so, it's time to switch up the wardrobe.  I have a small wardrobe, made even smaller because a third of it is taken up by boxes and a guitar amp (thanks big brother). Because of that, most of my winter essentials are kept in a box on a shelf at the top of my wardrobe so about this time of the year, I have to switch my lighter summer dresses and cardi's/jackets for my thicker winter clothes.

I also pop my sandals and jandals up onto the shelf, and down come my boots and black leather converse. I dig out my tights and thicker socks from the back of my drawer and I'm set.

Layers:
Layering up is my number one favourite thing about winter. I love that if you're cold, just throw another layer on (you can't do that in summer - if you're hot, you can't always take a layer off).

It's easy to transition a summer dress to winter - if it's sleeveless, just throw on a long sleeved/three quarter sleeved top under neath, or pair it with a complementary cardigan/long sleeved shirt. If it's super cold- you could always do both!

A nice jacket:
Investing in a good jacket is always a good idea. I cringe when I look at a price tag of a $70 jacket BUT if it's good quality and it's going to last - just do it. If it's not so cold, you can throw it on top of a shirt and jeans, or on cold days, wear a jumper with your jacket on as well. Layers. Simple.

Asos and Boohoo always have a nice selection of jackets, and always tend to have a sale or a promo code.  I have a Kathmandu puffer jacket and I love it so much, but it is very warm to wear. Probably not the most ideal for Auckland, but perfect for a city that actually gets snow.

Boots:
I get cold toes in winter. It's horrible. So a requirement for me in winter is pretty much boots/thicker footwear big enough for me to wear them comfortably with two pairs of socks. I have a pair of black leather converse I wear a lot, and I interchange them with some low heeled black boots for days when I feel like switching up the look, and when it's not been raining.

My goal is by next winter to own a pair of Doc Martens :)

Jumpers:
There's nothing I love more than a nice cosy oversized jumper on colder days. I can't wait to get a boyfriend one day so I can raid his closet and steal his jumpers. Jumpers too can be layered, start the day with a thinner jumper, and when you have to pop outside, you can put a bigger, thicker jumper on.

What are your autumn/winter cloth essentials?
